Client Brief

The view from their 18th century farmhouse is across open countryside and it was important that the vista would be an integral part of the design. Any planting would require as little maintenance as possible since neither Ed nor Esther are keen gardeners. Consideration was also to be given to lighting.

The Design

Low, deep cushioned seating was built with brick around a fire-pit; set within the area of the decking and over-looking the swimming pond. The subsequent space provides a stylish and relaxed environment in which to entertain.

Planting was confined to around the deck area and a border along the eastern side of the swimming pond. Much of the planting will grow to a height of 2 metres in a season and create a feeling of enclosure, while maintaining the magnificent views. Ornamental grasses feature within the predominately perennial planting scheme and only need to be cut back in early spring. Spring flowering bulbs were also planted in abundance.
